Summary

A new report from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology lays out the country's plans for its new-type energy storage industry which include shifting from being policy-driven to being market-driven. In the first half of the year, China's energy storage battery output exceeded 420 gigawatt-hours, a more than 100-percent annual increase. New-type energy storage has also evolved from a supporting role tied to renewable energy projects into an independent electricity market entity capable of participating in energy trading on its own. Industry leaders say energy storage is becoming a new type of "infrastructure" for power systems, not simply a supplement for renewables. Wang Jianbin, senior engineer, Equipment Industry Development Center, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology: "China's new-type energy storage installed capacity and application scale continue to expand, and both the market structure and global supply landscape are accelerating to optimize. Relying on China's complete industrial chain, cost advantages, and technological iteration capabilities, the global supply landscape is increasingly concentrating toward Chinese enterprises." The report was released during the 2026 World Energy Storage Conference held in mid-October in China's Ningde city. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
