Summary

If I had a nickel for every time an ’80s British horror movie got turned into a successful and faithful horror game almost four decades later, I wouldn’t have a lot of nickels. In fact, I’d probably have only one—thanks to Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival . It’s gross, brutal, and as horrific as you’ve come to expect from the franchise, but you don’t need to know Hellraiser to enjoy it. In fact, going in blind is an interesting experience, and right now, you can get a huge discount on it for a limited time. You play as Aidan, who chases extreme situations during the “fun” times with his girlfriend, as the pair accidentally summon the demonic Cenobites thanks to the familiar Genesis Configuration. (If I had a nickel for every time that happened to me… I wouldn’t have any.) After being knocked unconscious and becoming a captive of the Scarlet Church, Aidan fights against the cult’s desire to activate the Rite of Rebirth and attempts to find his girlfriend. In familiar “ horror game protagonist” fashion, Aidan isn’t some soldier armed to the teeth with weapons and ammunition. You’re no Arnold in Predator, so to speak. Instead, most of the game requires melee combat, meaning you’ll need to get close to your enemies and whammy them with clunky attacks. While that clunkiness would normally be a negative, Hellraiser: Revival’s atmosphere, combined with Aidan’s lack of fighting skills, makes each fight feel more like a struggle for survival than an action sequence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rA40lqttO8 I’ll be honest: Even as a horror fanatic, Hellraiser: Revival is uncomfortable at the best of times. Between intense gore that will make even the most steadfast squirm and brutal combat that will make your skin crawl, it’s not for the sensitive—or even those who are fairly comfortable with a bit of grossness. However, if you stick with it, that uncomfortable feeling doesn’t go away, but it does become easier to navigate, and it only adds to the horror and tension of Hellraiser’s world. If you’re looking for a uniquely disgusting, satisfying, and, above all else, excellent horror game for Halloween, you can grab Hellraiser: Revival for just $34 / £29.74 at Fanatical by using the code “FANATICAL15,” giving you a Steam key at a 15% discount off the listed price. Not bad for a recent release, in my eyes. Personally, I don’t need to go to extreme lengths to find satisfaction—a good deal on a Steam game is enough for me.
