Treating the biomass with potassium hydroxide before heating it to 400 deg.C produced biochar that captured 120.5 milligrams of CO₂ per gram at 40 deg.C, five times the capacity of untreated biochar prepared at the same temperature. The material retained 98.9% of its initial capacity after nine regeneration cycles. The findings suggest a promising route for turning marine biomass into materials that could support carbon capture while creating value from unwanted seaweed.
