Summary
For every "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" movie that offers hope for the future, there are plenty of other sci-fi films that end on notes of sacrifice, death, or despair. For every utopia, there is a dystopia, and that sense of hopelessness is often reflected in our science fiction stories. The following five movies feature protagonists who die, sometimes in tragically noble ways and other times in wasteful or harrowing circumstances. All of them leave viewers in a poignant state.
