By engineering a precisely controlled interfacial layer between the quantum dot core and its outer shell, the team suppressed the defects that typically broaden emission and reduce efficiency. The resulting red-emitting quantum dots reached a photoluminescence quantum yield of 95.3% with a narrow emission linewidth of 78 nanometers, and the light-emitting diodes fabricated from them delivered an external quantum efficiency of approximately 5%.
