Summary

A research team has found that tree structure, species balance, and terrain slope are associated with different patterns of carbon storage in a forest fragment in southern Brazil. Larger tree trunk area and greater aboveground carbon were linked to more carbon in fallen organic material, but these relationships weakened on steeper ground. Soils stored more carbon where tree species were more evenly represented. The findings could help improve forest carbon assessments and guide conservation and restoration strategies by showing why trees, litter, and soil should be evaluated together.
